Book of Destiny: Slot Overview
Software developer Print Studios was launched in 2020 by a team of industry vets with the goal of designing slots for players 'in search of deeper gameplay.' Their first game is titled Book of Destiny, and as you might expect, is built around the ever-popular Book of Ra format. It's by no means a straight copy, though the principal features and gameplay will be completely familiar to a lot of players. As part of the 'deeper gameplay' concept, Print Studios has expanded the gambling opportunities for players willing to take risks for potentially greater rewards while altering the notorious expanding symbol free spins feature.
With a light, airy look, Book of Destiny presents a pleasant view of Ancient Egypt. We get the clean lines of hieroglyph covered pillars, background stonework, and a couple of impressive statues sitting on either side of the 5-reel, 10-payline game grid. Obviously, this is something experienced 'book of' players will have seen loads of times in the past, but the quality is high and makes a positive first impression for what's to come.
Statistically, Book of Destiny throws up a couple of surprises. Okay, they aren't through the looking glass, secret government document revelations, yet a couple of talking points all the same. The biggest is potential, which is a lot higher than regular Ra-style games. A fairly volatile game, RTP is decent at 96.5%, increasing to 96.72% when buying the bonus rather than triggering it organically. Available on any device, Book of Destiny comes with base stakes of 10 p/c to $/€80 per spin.
With 10 fixed paylines, wins hit when 2 or 3 of a kind land left to right from the leftmost reel. Card royals 10-A sit at the lower end of the paytable, while the higher value tiles are Anubis, Thoth, Horus, and an explorer, slightly more mature than the ones you usually stumble across in these games. Landing a five of a kind premium combination will get you a payout of 75 to 500 times the stake, meaning 5,000x for a full screen of expanded explorers. As is tradition in book slots, the book symbol doubles as both scatter and wild, replacing any other symbol to complete a line win. Wilds also pay out when forming combinations of themselves, possessing the same value as the top-paying explorer.
Book of Destiny: Slot Features
Expanding symbols in free spins remain Book of Destiny's main feature, but in this one, you get to 'Choose your destiny and start printing' - to a degree. It kicks off when 3 or more scatter symbols land to trigger the free spins bonus round. Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters awards 10 free spins plus a payout of 2, 20, or 200 times the stake.
Before free spins start, players pick one of the pay symbols to be the Expanding Symbol in the feature. Expanding Symbols fill all positions on the reel, paying all lines, even in non-adjacent positions. You can then go straight to the bonus round or gamble for the chance to add extra Expanding Symbols. If gambling, you spin a Destiny Gamble wheel divided into white and black segments. Land on white to pick another symbol, up to 3 in total, or landing on black reverts a second or third Expanding Symbol back to normal. If you only have one Expanding Symbol, the free spins are lost.
If 3 or more scatter symbols land on a single spin during the bonus game, +10 extra free spins are awarded, and another Expanding Symbol is randomly selected.
Book of Destiny also comes with two additional gambling options. One is the Scatter Boost which increases the current bet by 50%. Activating it means you get more scatters on the reels, theoretically getting players to the bonus game quicker. The other option is the bonus buy, which gets you to free spins straight away for the cost of 75x the bet.
Book of Destiny: Slot Verdict
Book of Destiny is a competently designed 'book of' slot with a few extra bits for connoisseurs to rummage through. Everything in Print Studio's first slot is neatly wrapped up, so there are no disappointments, or major wow moments either for that matter. Kind of like competitor studio Lucksome's debut not long ago, though now they're up to their third release at the time of writing. There's no telling how long it will take Print Studios to reach their third. The company states it is 'Going against the trend of churning out games at a rapid pace, they will deliver games that are meant to be played for years...' This echoes a similar approach Push Gaming tends to make, which makes sense since Print Studios' team comprises some ex-Push employees.
Will Book of Destiny be played several years down the track? There's no reason why it won't be, though since it resides in a category of slots that is phenomenally large and growing, it'll most probably end up smothered at some stage by upstarts flaunting new features to spark life into the age-old format. For now, Book of Destiny is one of the better Book slots. It has a nice look, nails all the essentials while adding a couple of semi-innovative features to help it stand out.
These are mainly additional gamble features, so if you're not keen on pushing fortune to the limit, many of them won't apply. Gambling with free spins is a tough call. Get it right, and you've got extra expanding symbols, get it wrong and, oh well. You can see the interplay between the reasonably priced bonus buy and tempting fate on the Destiny Gamble wheel. Some may love it; some may find it a bit too risky. It is totally optional, of course, so players choice. The final cherry on top and the thing that may well put Book of Destiny ahead of much of its competition is its max win figure of 10,823x the bet – more than double what you find in most of these games. All up, a safely solid debut from Print Studios, possessing a build quality that tees up anticipation for future releases.
